What is Lawn Aeration?
Aeration is a process of pulling cores of soil and grass from your lawn and deposits them on the surface. This is done with a machine that pushes hollow cylinders into the ground forcing out the soil cores. Generally 8-10 cores are pulled from each square foot of turf, with an average sized lawn producing over 8,000 cores.What is Lawn Aeration?
Fall is the ideal time to aerate, the lawns roots are most active and this allows for the greatest generation of new grass plants. Although many people ask about aerating in spring we find it best not to disturb the soil when weeds and crabgrass are already germinating exessively. Opening the soil will bring more problem weeds to the soil surface and will break any barrier set up by a pre-emergent treament.

The benefits of aerating are abundant;
- Allows sufficient oxygen to reach the grasses roots. The roots require oxygen to grow, while having the ability to absorb water and nutrients most efficiently.
- Leaving the cores on the soil surface to break up will help increase the soil microorganisms that will help decompose thatch.
- Loosening the soil will allow the turfs root system to move more freely, generating both lateral and deeper growth. These will help form new plants which will thicken up the grass and also make the turf more resilient in fighting off heat, drought, and disease.
- Provides an ideal seed bed for planting new seed and will produce excellent new growth.
Aeration is the secret weapon in establishing a healthy lawn throughout the St. Louis metro area. With clay soil being so abundant in Missouri, aeration is the best recommended practice to have done annually to keep your grasses root zone working to the best of its ability. |
